Why did Slovakia and the Czech Republic separate?
The reasons which led Czechs and Slovaks to form a one country together did not longer exist. The fear of strong German minority in Czech republic or strong Hungarian minority in Slovakia was gone so slowly the disconnect between the people living in Czech part of the country and the ones living in Slovak part of the country began growing. The idea of Czechoslovakism which was pushed by Prague put Czech people in privileged position within the federation (the capital city was Czech, most people in government were Czech) but it was not acceptable to Slovak people. Slovak people demanded more autonomy which helped the nationalist tendencies in Slovakia to grow stronger. Czech people on the other hand wanted to push for more economic reforms and weren't willing to give Slovakia more autonomy. But despite these tendencies, Slovak and Czech people didn't want to break the federation. The decision happened behind closed doors, there was no referendum held. The Czech leader Václav Klaus and Slovak leader Vladimír Me?iar decided together to split Czechoslovakia into Czech republic and Slovakia, so to they could each lead their country in a way they found best for their people.
